LGBTQ+ History Wales Songbook is a social commentary for baritone and piano. It gives artistic expression to text found in Saint Fagans, National Museum of History's LGBTQ+ History Collection. It was developed in association with St Fagans, National Museum of History and the project was supported by Arts Council Wales.
Perisgop is a dramatic song cycle for two sopranos, (Welsh language) speaking voice, speaking chorus and flute and piano. It presents a view of the world through someone else’s eyes and gives artistic expression to the experience of the Covid 19 Pandemic from the perspective of visually impaired people. It was created in collaboration with writer Kaite O’Reilly and film maker Jake Sawyers, and was developed in association with Ucan Productions. It was commissioned, as part of Tapestri, by Ty Cerdd with the support of Arts Council of Wales.
Twitchers is a social commentary for speaking voice and piano (or vocalising pianist). It gives voice to the experience of the Covid 19 Pandemic from the perspective of disabled artists in Wales. The text, which is based on lived experience, was created in association with Disability Arts Cymru. It was commissioned by Ni Cawn Ein Dileu [‘We Shall Not Be Removed’], with the support of the European Cultural Foundation.
Grey Matters is a dramatic song cycle for mezzo soprano and cello which examines the experience of social distancing. The songs are based on the testimony of brain injury survivors and were created, in association with Headway Cardiff and South East Wales, during the Covid 19 Pandemic. This work was commissioned by Mid Wales Opera through Music at Your Place with the support of Arts Council of Wales.
The Bridge Between Breaths is a chamber opera for tenor, two sopranos and an ensemble of clarinet and cello. It is centred around the felling of Colston’s statue in Bristol and was written, in collaboration with Hafsah Aneela Bashir, in response to a commission from formidAbility with financial assistance from Arts Council England.
Grinding is a docu-musical social commentary for male voices and piano. It gives artistic expression to the experiences of Gay men in South Wales on dating applications. It was developed in association with South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus with the support of Ty Cerdd and Comic Relief.
Only Breath is a CD release on the Ty Cerdd label of New Choral Music from Wales. It includes my choral pieces Two Morys Rhymes (2013) for male voice choir and Braich Wen (2017) for mixed choir.
Hors D’oeuvres is a collection of four piano solos. Each written as a landmark birthday gift for a fellow composer, the set explores a range of pianistic conventions comprising an invention, a barcarolle, a song without words and a toccata. They were recorded as the title tracks for a portrait disk of my work on the Ty Cerdd label.
Compass Points is a collection of four instrumental solos (Eastcombe, Westholm, Nor’field, Southill) for the ‘orchestral’ string instruments comprising pieces for violin, viola, cello and double bass. They each took their inspiration from a musical tradition in one of the four main compass directions from me (at time of writing) and they were written for various performers and occasions. First heard in Connecticut, Cardiff and Cambridge, they were recorded for inclusion on a portrait disk of my work on the Ty Cerdd label.
Elemental studies is a collection of four instrumental solos (Seascape, Airway, Earthwork, Firepit) for the ‘doubling’ woodwind instruments which comprises pieces for piccolo, cor anglais, bass clarinet and contrabassoon. They each took their inspiration from one of the four classical scientific elements and were written for various performers and occasions. First heard in Cardiff, Ghent, London and Chicago, they were recorded for inclusion on a portrait disk of my work on the Ty Cerdd label.
